PORTLAND – A 11 year old cancer survivor, who was taken to a hospital for treatment of a head wound, suddenly and mysteriously ignites.

Ireland Lane’s shirt suddenly and inexplicably caught fire. She ran screaming from the hospital bed into the hallway of the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital where hospital personnel managed to extinguish her. Ireland suffered third degree burns on her chest, neck, arms and ears.

What caused Ireland to ‘self-combust’ is yet unknown and still being investigated.

The eleven year old tells the hospital she was using hand-sanitizer to clean her hands after painting a wooden box that she was going to give as a gift to her caretakers, when her shirt suddenly began to burn.

Authorities are investigating the possibility that the hand-sanitizer, which is based on alcohol, could have erupted in flames because of static electricity that was generated when Ireland rubbed her hands together.

Ireland has since the freaky accident been allowed to go home but not until she underwent a surgery first. The condition is bad but stable.

Doctors say that she must have yet a second surgery, which will be performed on the same day she celebrates her 12th birthday.
