Actress Lucy Lawless Arrested

AUCKLAND – Xena actress Lucy Lawless has been arrested in New-Zealand for occupying an oil tanker.

Lawless has been a long time activist for preservation of the arctic. According to Greenpeace, she participated in a 3 days long event to demonstrate against plans to begin drilling along the Alaskan coast.

Together with 5 other individuals, the actress climbed on board the tanker Friday morning. She was arrested shortly thereafter.

The tanker is scheduled to sail to the Pole region to begin ‘research’ drilling for Shell Oil company.

Lucy Lawless was nominated as Ambassador to Green Peace in 2009.

“This chapter may be over but our fight has just begun,” said Lawless.

An official charge against the actress will be filed later this week, to which Lawless responded:

“That’s the least of my concerns. I am a firm believer. It is time we convert to green energy and not sail to the other side of the world to squeeze out the last drop of oil.”

Shell Oil company will be conducting test drills in Alaska next summer by request of the United States, which has many activists around the world in uproar.

America promised it will closely follow the company’s activities in Alaska, but that statement only worries the activists more.

Oil drilling is dangerous and bad for the environment. The reminder of the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is still fresh on everyone’s mind.
