NEW YORK – Toy manufacturer Mattel is releasing a bald version of the world famous Barbie doll, especially for girls who no longer have hair as a result of cancer.

The decision to make a Barbie without the characteristic long golden locks was inspired by a Facebook campaign conducted by two mothers whose daughters have cancer and lost their hair as a result of chemo treatments.

More than 150,000 people gave their support to the initiative in recent months. Although Mattel was skeptical in the beginning, the manufacturer is now going to produce a bald Barbie.

Spokesman Alan Hilowitz explains to CNN that the doll is provided including wigs, hats and scarves. The special Barbie will not be sold in stores but goes directly to hospitals and institutions that take care of children with cancer.

The two mothers who began the campaign are overjoyed with the news.

“We had expected that the idea would appeal to a lot of people, but that it would take on such a gigantic flight, was also a surprise for us.”
