ZURICH – The famous Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland that has become one of Disneyland’s theme park icons, is threatening to fall apart.

Scientists have discovered that warmer temperatures aren’t just melting the glaciers on the Swiss mountain, but the towering rock itself is crumbling because of severe climate changes.

Experts warn that all the cable runs transporting people to and from the mountain are in danger of collapsing as well.

The 14,690 foot high Matterhorn sits on the border between Switzerland and Italy and is one of the most majestic and best known and most inspirational mountains in the world.

The triangle shape of the mountain, resembling a pyramid, was used as the basis for the logo of the delicious Toblerone Swiss Milk Chocolate.

The University of Zurich reported the negative effects climate change is having on the Matterhorn in the Geophysical Research journal.

For five year, scientists studied the Matterorn vigorously and measured 17 different locations on the mountain.

The study found that not only are the Matterhorn’s glaciers melting at an alarming rate but the mountain itself is crumbling because of the constant dangerous cycle of frost and melt, set on by warmer temperatures.
