KARACHI – Doctors in Pakistan succeeded in removing the additional four legs a baby was born with in the city of Karachi.

The newborn, who suffered a genetic defect was perfectly healthy, except the toddler had six legs protruding from its lower belly.

Surgery was the only option doctors had to give the child any chance of survival or normalcy. But the delicateness of the operation made surgeons concerned and worried that the toddler could suffer complications and die during the long and tedious surgery.

Doctors eventually decided to perform the surgery and attempt to remove the excess limbs. The director of the hospital where the surgery took place, said the operation lasted four hours and was successful.

“The baby is now at intensive care. He is in stable condition and being watched by doctors and nurses. I hope he makes a full recovery,” said the director.

The surgery was performed completely free of charge for the parents of the toddler. A government charity paid the hospital over $US6,000.

The parents of the toddler are cousins and this is their first child.

That’s why doctors have been speculating that a genetic defect caused the rare occurrence.

A spokesperson for the hospital said the child should make a full recovery and have a normal life.

The father who had asked the government to financially assist them, expressed his gratitude.
