HOLLYWOOD – A few hours after the announcement was made that actor Andy Griffith, famous for playing sheriff in the Andy Griffith Show, died this morning at the age of 86, his family released a statement saying he had been “laid to rest” near his home in North Carolina.
What sounded like a mistake turns out to be true: The actor is indeed already buried, reports TMZ.
A funeral director says Griffith was buried at 11:30 AM, immediately after he died, on his Roanoke Island farm, as per his wishes. That suggests he went without embalming, though there’s no confirmation.
In North Carolina it is legal however to bury bodies without embalming them first.

According to TMZ, Andy’s burial followed a small, private service with close friends and family in attendance.
