LONDON – Jon Lord, co-founder of the famous rock band Deep Purple died on Monday at a London Clinic. He was 71.

Lord had been battling pancreatic cancer for some time. A statement announcing Lord’s death read: “Jon went from darkness into light”.

Jon Lord co-founded the world renowned band Deep Purple with drummer Ian Page in 1968. The band went on to achieve international fame and recognition. Lord retired from the group in 2002.

Deep Purple went on to record mega hits like ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Child in time’, ‘Woman from Tokyo’; many of the bands top singles were co-written by Jon Lord.

The introduction riff played in the song Smoke on the Water is the most popular guitar riff to date, eagerly learned by any novice guitar player.

Jon Lord also worked together with the bands Whitesnake, Paice and the Flower Pot Men.
