MEMPHIS – August 16th 2012 marks the 35th year of rock and roll king Elvis Presley’s passing.
People have already begun to gather at Graceland in Memphis and quiet wakes and candlelight vigils have been planned.
Elvis impersonators will perform some of the singer’s greatest hits.
Elvis Presley shot to fame in 1956 with the release of ‘Heartbreak Hotel’.
Presley was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century. A cultural icon, he is commonly known by the single name Elvis. He is often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll” or simply “the King”.
Prescription drug abuse severely compromised his health, and he died suddenly on August 16 1977 at the age of 42.
Despite being gone for 35 years, the Elvis Presley estate continues to earn multi-million dollars a year in revenue from tickets sale to see Graceland, record sales and souvenirs.
He is one of the few celebrities whose larger than life persona continues to remain strong even in death.
