NEW YORK – Yoko Ono, widow of deceased ex-Beatle John Lennon, rewarded the Lennon Ono Grant for Peace to the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, of which 3 members are in custody.
Pyotr Verzilov, the husband of one of the three members was at hand to receive the prize.
Ono commended the members of the band for their believe in freedom of expression and promised she would commit to freeing the three women who have been sentenced to serve 2 years in a labor camp.
The three Pussy Riot members appealed their conviction with a higher court. That trial is scheduled to begin in October.
The Lennon Ono Grant for Peace is awarded once every two years.
