AMSTERDAM – Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel died Wednesday night from complications of esophagus cancer. She was 60 years old.
The actress had been battling the illness for several months.
She’s survived by her partner Peter Brul and her son Arthur. The funeral will take place in a close and intimate gathering.
Sylvia Kristel jumped to fame during the 1970s playing the role of a young woman who lets go of all her sexual inhibitions in the movie series ‘Emmanuelle’.
The movie series was watched by 300 million people and brought in a staggering $US900 million; a phenomenal success for that time.
Stunningly, Sylvia Kristel was only paid $US6,000 for acting the lead character in the super successful movies, forcing her to sell her shares of the films for $US150,000 to survive.
The films were based on a 1957 novel written by Marayat Rollet-Andriane who used the alias ”Emanuelle Arsan’; the book had no title.
The actress played in an additional 50 films, mostly limited to European audiences.
